This is a beautiful Souvenir Sheet, issued in 2012 in Central Africa, honoring Leopold Sedar Senghor (1906-2011). The stamp and sheet each feature an image of Senghor, the Senegalese poet, politician, and cultural theorist who for two decades served as the first president of Senegal, and who is regarded by many as one of the most important African intellectuals of the 20th century. Both the stamp and sheet also feature various butterflies, including the Orange-banded Shoemaker Butterfly (Catonephele orites), the Malachite (Siproeta stelenes), the African Swallowtail (Papilio dardanus), and the Indian Leafwing (Kallima paralekta).
