This is a beautiful Souvenir Sheet, issued in the Republic of Guinea in 2012, celebrating the 500th anniversary of the birth of the cartographer Gerard Mercator (1512-1594). The sheet features images of a globe, Caravelle ships, and maps, including the Mercator projection world map, which allowed navigators to sail across the entire ocean on approximately straight paths.
